The depiction of the Mullaiperiyar Dam as unsafe in the movie Empuran, which has been released in many languages across the country, is highly condemnable. It is very sad that the film starring top stars like Mohanlal and Prithviraj is creating unnecessary fear and panic among the people of Kerala by setting up baseless false propaganda through the scenes in the movie.
The Mullaiperiyar Dam was constructed in 1895 to alleviate the severe drought in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu due to the efforts of the British engineer John Pennycuick. This dam caters to the irrigation needs of about 2 lakh acres of agricultural land in 5 districts of Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram, besides being a source of drinking water for the people of southern districts. Vegetables grown with water from the Mullaiperiyar dam meet 80% of Kerala’s vegetable demand. John Pennycuick, who built the Mullaiperiyar Dam by selling his property, is still worshipped as a deity by the people of South Tamil Nadu.
The Supreme Court constituted a special engineer committee to inspect the Mullaiperiyar Dam, which is an important source of water for Southern Tamil Nadu, and per the committee report, the Supreme Court informs that the Mullaiperiyar Dam is strong. Even after that, the Malayalam film industry, with the tacit support of the Kerala government, continues to indulge in such false propaganda, which is a conspiracy to disrupt the harmony between the people of the two states. When you talk about religious unity in this film, why did you sow racial hatred?
There are thousands of Malayalees living in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, Kerala has been home to a large number of Tamils for a long time. Apart from vegetables, mineral resources are being transported from Tamil Nadu to Kerala every day. Instead, medical waste, garbage, and stray dogs are smuggled from Kerala and dumped on the Tamil Nadu border. However, the Kerala film industry can never be allowed to continue to disrupt the humanity of the Tamils who have tolerated and tolerated all this.
At a time when the film’s hero, Mohanlal, and other great artists of Kerala are living peacefully by buying properties in Tamil Nadu, portraying Tamils as enemies of the Malayalee people and Tamil Nadu trying to destroy Kerala is a planned conspiracy to incite communal hatred and cause riots between the people of the two states.
Therefore, I urge the team of Empuraan to immediately remove the defamatory propaganda scenes portraying the Mullaiperiyar dam as unsafe.
