We, Naam Tamilar Katchi urge the Union Government to review its definition that reduces the Area of the Aravalli Mountain Range.

In November 2025, the Supreme Court of India accepted the new definition for the Aravalli Hills recommended by the Union Government’s Expert Committee. According to this, only land areas with an elevation of 100 meters and above from the surrounding terrain will be recognized as "Aravalli Hills." This change in definition threatens to lead to the destruction of one of India's oldest and most vital mountain ranges. According to data from the Forest Survey of India (FSI), out of the 12,081 hillocks in the Aravalli range, only 1,048 (about 8.7%) are above 100 meters in height. This means that 91% of the hill areas will no longer be legally classified as "hills." This poses a risk of completely losing these hills to mining and construction.
The Aravalli range acts as a great "Natural Barrier" preventing the spread of the Thar Desert eastward. It is also the small hillocks and continuous ridges under 100 meters that collectively prevent sandstorms and desert expansion. Removing these areas risks the desertification of Delhi and North India.
Furthermore, the Aravalli hills function as a massive "Water Absorber." If these catchment areas, which recharge groundwater, are destroyed, the groundwater level in Gurugram, Faridabad, and several districts of Rajasthan will become much worse than the current situation. Excluding an ecologically significant area based on the single criterion of "height" affects the right to life of the people depending on the ecosystem.
The government must protect natural resources as a public trust. This re-definition, which favors illegal mining cartels, is a failure of the government's duty.
The definition should be based on the ecological role, wildlife corridors, and groundwater recharging capacity of the hills, not just their height. The Central Government should reverse this decision, which was taken merely for administrative convenience, and appoint a new committee consisting of geological and ecological experts to bring out a proper demarcation.
On behalf of the Naam Tamilar Katchi party, we urge the Central Government to declare the hillocks under 100 meters as "Ecologically Sensitive Zones" and take necessary action to put an end to all mining activities in those areas.
